SHSM Programs
Agriculture
The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in Agriculture gives students an opportunity to specialize, gain qualifications, and plan a career pathway in various areas of the Agriculture sector while still in high school. The SHSM Program has a number of required components, designed to give students a “leg-up” to pursue post-secondary opportunities in each of the identified sectors, valuing apprenticeship, college, university and the work place.
The Agri-Food Industry, representing 1 in 8 Canadian jobs, is drastically increasing the need to feed the world. Global demand will require 70% more food by 2050 and Canada will help fill that demand. Ontario has more than half the ‘class 1’ farmland available in our country and has about 158,000 people associated with the industry.
